Sketch for Box Cover ~ Emily Marsh

Here's a sketch for my game cover. There's my underwater castle on the left, and on the right is a bubble that is holding a land scene, showing how parts of the game are above water. I was considering adding more of these landscapes in some of the other bubbles. What do you think? Does this work for the cover?

Also, here's my vague idea of the plot as of now: The underwater princess hero finds a magical harpoon that allows her to leave her underwater world, and transform into a creature with legs. After exploring on land one day, she returns to see her castle abandoned/destroyed and she has to explore above water to find her family and rescue her world. One challenge for her is that to attack, she throws the harpoon (which she can usually retrieve) but when she's not touching it, she loses her ability to change forms.

Edited Character ~ Emily Marsh

Hi Sean, here's my edited character. I changed the anatomy to make more sense--shrunk the head, elongated the arms, and adjusted the hips and widened the torso. I also added texture call-outs for more detail. Hope this is a lot better!

Emily Ormsby - revamped sketch

Turning this shape, especially the large puffy skirt, was tough to make into a character who could put up a fight, but the silhouette just in itself had a lot of character in it that I was really drawn to and excited to work with. So I took some of your suggestions and gave my fairy godmother here a dose of badassery. Should I continue to work with her or the other character?

More Badass... Maybe.

Here's an attempt to tweak my character's design a bit. What do you think about altering the design so that the character is wearing pants? It changes the profile quite a bit so I thought I would run it by you before I get into color and action. I felt that the original dress design made her look more "fluffy" than I would want in a world-saving hero.  So I rolled up her sleeves, replaced her necklace and generally tried to make her look more action-ready and capable. Anyway, let me know what you think. If you want to keep the original profile, I can work off of #2 with some tweaks as I figure out movement and flow.

Character Drawing ~ Emily Marsh

Before I move on to the other sketches, I was wondering if you could take a look at my character, Sean. I have a land version and water version. I also changed the head to be a solution to the "hat" problem we talked about on Friday. Here's my original silhouette so you can see what I mean.

Feedback on Designs (Emma Moreman)

Here are different versions of the better two hero designs. I had difficulty designing the helmets for the male character, so I am considering not having a helmet, or at least not making it a major part of the character.

Thumbnails ~ Emily Marsh

I was struggling with getting out of my head and making these drawings loose and gestural, so I kinda went overboard with the brush pen and did 75. Hope you like them, Sean! :)

Assignment #1 - 30 Sketches for your "Generic Fantasy Video Game Hero"

Hey everyone. Here is where I would like you to post your assignments for the class.

The First assignment was to design the HERO CHARACTER for a video game set in a Generic Fantasy World. You have been given very little to go on, which can be great, or can be a curse.

Your challenge is to design a character that will please both your "Cool" Art Director (played by me) AND the "Uncool" Business Investor guy who wants something he can sell to the market (also played by me.... sort of).

The first step is to do AT LEAST 30 thumbnail sketches and post them here.

PLEASE LABEL YOUR POSTS with your name and the word "thumbnails".

Thanks! I look forward to seeing the results!
